Over the years 'Puerto Rico' has taken a solid and firm position as a player's favorite and in this way has become a classic that still is played with joy.
To celebrate its tenth anniversary and to honour the author and put the game once again on a podium Alea has issued a special deluxe edition.
The special starts on the outside; the box has a luxurious look with bright gold lettering and the red-brown speckled pattern suggests that we are dealing with a wooden box.

The game was already reviewed at its publication in 2002 and therefore gameplay is considered as known. The Dutch (only) review can be read here. Here we will deal with the differences from the standard regular edition, such as the addition of new buildings. These have been published before and elsewhere, as part of the 'Schatzkiste' or even as download, but it is nice to see it in this box now, incorporated in the game and game rules. This also goes for the addition 'Die Adligen' who give a totally new feel to the game. The heart of this addition are the red colonists, or rather nobles, that come ashore via the colonists ship and give various extra possibilities in a game, such as the ability to buy or sell an extra settlers tile when having and occupying a Grundbuchamt. The player with an occupied Hoflieferamt is allowed to ship up to five different goods to the general supply, one of each, before the captain phase starts. The Juwelier brings extra income; 1 Dublon per noble on a players board, and the new large building Hofgarten scores points for each acquired noble. In total the addition 'Die Adligen' has eight new buildings that are played together with the buildings of the regular game. At the 26 'Neue Gebäude' players one by one choose a building, from the regular game or the addition, till the building board is completely occupied. New buildings are placed on the board according to their cost. When playing this addition, 26 variable buildings are out of the game, which contributes anew to sufficient variation in an already very variable gameplay.

Of course one can also decide to play the standard game without any additions. But: standard? This is a deluxe edition, and it shows! To end the online non-discussion about the quality of components for once and for all, Alea has spared no expenses: all components, so this includes all tiles and buildings, the boards and role cards are not made of thick card board, but they are made of thick card board!
The sketchy buildings on the building tiles have undergone a redraw and are slightly richer in appearance, but for the purists there is still the possibility to play without this distraction; the back of each building tile has the regular standard specification without the illustration.

Of course the beautiful heavy gold colored coins immediately draw the attention; yes, one could call it a disadvantage there is only one coin value, and so it takes five coins instead of the card board fiver from the regular game, but the richness of the game actually is emphasized by such a pile of gold coins!

The merchant ships and the colonist ship have gotten a richer look, and the wares a no longer eight-edged cylinders, but truly tiny wooden crates in the old familiar colours. The colonists themselves have been upgraded to cylinders instead of the tiny discs and in this way have become more convenient to deal with.
Everything in the production has been done with the utmost attention, and everything has been done to achieve the best effect. This must be the reason for the absence of the blue triangle at the front of the box cover, the Ravensburger logo; it would have impaired the effect the cover has now. It may or may not be true, but I like to think of it this way!

For those who do not yet own the game: this edition gets them an instant update; everything is in it, and all components are of the highmost quality. And those who already own the regular game? They can upgrade their probably worn because frequently played copy to this deluxe version. The game itself is one of the highest rated games in the international gaming community, and with this deluxe edition it will consolidate its position even more. In the course of its existence, 'Puerto Rico' has received only more recognition, and has grown even more with this deluxe edition. The recognition at its initial publication was already high, and although it is rare and it seldom happens it happens now: the game receives the highest recommendation!
