You must have a lot of time on your hands if you want to play Das Zepter von Zavandor, because the game takes at least 3 hours! Players that enjoy a fantasy setting with wizardry and related subjects will certainly like this game; the more down to earth players will recognize 'Zavandor' as a 'regular' development game. However, both kind of players will be attracted by the atmosphere of this game. 'Zavandor' looks very attractive; the box for example is designed to look like an old magic book with a leather cover.

All the other components too contribute to the atmosphere of the game; however the illustration of the golddust that is kept in little bags was initially mistaken for little moths! A little typo on the playing cards is not that bad, but it is very cumbersome that the starting positions of the players is not printed on the cards themselves and has to be looked up in several different places in the rules.

It seems like there are always two players that are going strong, and one or two players that are struggling. Once you're in the rear guard it's very difficult to recover and take the lead. One mistake, like buying the wrong gems of purchasing a very expensive artifact can haunt a player for the rest of the game. It is important to choose the right moment to switch to more expensive, more valuable gems; once you're on the right track you'll have an easy ride to a sure victory!

The first player that has enough money to buy a sentinel has a big advantage, because the other players won't be able to raise the bid. This player can then for a low price obtain the sentinel with the most favorable bonus point-conditions.

Unfortunately, the German rules standard as it has developed over the last years has not been met in this game; the rules, even the second edition, are unclear, and they lack proper illustrations and examples. In the second (online) version, however, it is finally explained that 'enchant' just means 'buy'… This doesn't make the game more accessible, but 'Das Zepter von Zavandor' is not a game for the untrained player anyway. But with an experienced player acting as a guide, this magical world where cloaks of camouflage, magic girdles and crystal balls are very common phenomena, can become available for the inexperienced player as well.
