Starting from a large start tile, each turn a player takes one tile from the stack and places it anywhere adjacent to an already placed tile, putting the depicted resource on the tile, plus any other resource of a players choice in any of the other corners of the tile.

After that, a player has three actions to move his boat with, travelling along the white lines, collecting resources, putting them on the boat, and sailing back to boot camp to collect the money for it. Another action could be to acquire one of the temple cards that come from easy to hard. On it are the building conditions, for instance water in the north, woods in the south, and mountains in the east.

These conditions are very general: if only some water, anywhere north of the temple to be built exists, this condition is already met. The card shows how many points it scores at game end. These conditions also will influence where a player will place a certain tile. Each time a player places his temple, he unlocks either more actions or earns a special end condition card, for instance the card  that shows an island with a temple and a tree scores two additional victory points. The game ends when a player has placed all his temples or when the stack of tiles is depleted.
